Heart of Darkness Essay

Investigate the account methods utilized in the opening of Heart of Darkness Heart of Darkness opens with a feeling of chance and experience, which in a split second made in the main passage by symbolism of the Nellie, sitting tight for the change of the tide; The possibility of a waterway and the ocean makes a feeling of excursion. Anyway while there is an environment of fervor, there is likewise feeling of basic strain. One manner by which these clashing impressions are made, is by differentiating the possibility of chance through the waterway to London which is portrayed as severe,. For instance in the subsequent section, Conrad portrays that the ocean reach of the Thames extended like an endless waterway† while the â€Å"air was dim above Gravesend, and dense into a sad despair, agonizing unmoving. Here the possibility of an endless conduit appears to recommend opportunity, and excursion which is compared by the abusive environment made by the words â€Å"gloom and brooding†. The abusive environment of London and the opportunity of the waterway is fortified through emphasis of misery and dimness which differentiated against symbolism of light. For instance, the stream is portrayed as â€Å"shining pacifically, the sky without a spot was amiable monstrosity of flawless light.† Imagery of impeccable light, on water is one of magnificence and furthermore gives a feeling of virtue, and experience; On the other hand the misery agonizing unmoving appears makes a feeling of premonition Conrad utilizes redundancy of the word â€Å"gloom† and â€Å"brooding† all through to strengthen this unpropitious climate. Further in the initial Conrad represents the misery and portrays how it was â€Å"brooding over the upper spans, became serious consistently, as though enraged by the methodology of the sun.† That London is distant by the sun causes London to appear to be unnatural and subsequently fortifies a feeling of anxiety particularly when differentiated once more. The possibility of the characteristic and the unnatural is utilized all through to underline a feeling of anxiety about; London is depicted as â€Å"a enormous town checked forebodingly on the sky/a startling glare under the stars.† Even against the boundlessness of the sky, London stands apart creation it appear to be threatening. Also the symbolism of the stars pass on normal magnificence which conflicts against London which is portrayed as â€Å"monstrous†. Another model is that the ocean and sky are portrayed as being welded together without a joint; The utilization of welded makes it appeared and constrained repeating a feeling of something being incongruent about the scene. Apparently, the purpose behind this differentiating symbolism isn't just to make a sentiment of anticipation to the excursion yet additionally speaks to Conrad’s emotions towards colonization; On the one hand there is the feeling that colonization is sure, it makes opportunity, yet there is likewise a thought that colonization was degenerate. A significant theme in the opening of the content which appears to encapsulate both these thoughts is exemplification of the waterway Thames. The waterway Thames speaks to the intensity of London as it was the focal point of exchange and in this way on one level, references to the stream streaming remind the peruser there is a lot to be picked up by the excursion. This is exhibited as Conrad makes references to its recorded past. Conrad depicts † it had borne every one of those boats whose names resemble gems blazing in the evening of time/, what significance had not drifted on the ebb of that waterway into the riddle of an obscure earth,† language, for example, the â€Å"an obscure earth†, makes it see that the excursion will be strange and energizing as all excursions have begun from the stream Thames; There is a feeling that history will be rehashed. This is stressed by a feeling of consistent development of the stream which is made by similar sounding word usage and the very structure of the opening. Joseph Conrad portrays â€Å"we took a gander at the revered stream not in the distinctive flush of a brief day that comes and withdraws perpetually yet in the august light of standing memories† The similar sounding word usage makes the sentence stream underscoring the possibility of the waterway being persistent instead of a † striking flush† and accentuating a thought of unlimited open doors which can add to the â€Å"august of withstanding memories†. This all adds to a sentiment of hopefulness and thought of imperialism being certain. The very structure of the content additionally appears to imitate the congruity of the waterway by changing from the past to introduce, making a nostalgic vibe. For instance, after the section about the experiences of the men who had made the country glad, the following pas sage changes to the sun setting. Notwithstanding, the utilization of the stream as speaking to the intensity of London likewise helps the peruser to remember the † huge town† subsequently making a negative impression. Like references to London being set apart against the sky, the possibility of the waterway consistently streaming fortifies London’s power. Conrad could be suggesting that while there are some positive components to colonization, for example, opportunity and experience, there is something unnatural and degenerate about it as it depends on slaughter.. This thought is exemplified, by the possibility of the sun setting and abandoning streaming white to a dull red without beams and without heat. Here the symbolism of the sun setting, fortifies the possibility of another excursion, however the white to red additionally could be representative of the carnage going to come and gore which made London so incredible.

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest Character Analysis - Free Essay Example

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest is a novel written by Ken Kesey, documenting a hidden world of men, whos lives have been incapsulated into a mental ward over a broad spectrum of societal differences. Among these men, is Billy Bibbit. His character defies the current-time definition of mentally handicapped, as he is simply a man living with built up anxiety, a verbal stutter, and a push-over demeanor. His character crippling under the weight of his own mind sets the stage for many other characters, such as Nurse Ratched, McMurphy, and even his own mother, to use his nervous energy to their deceitful advantage. Billy has a nervous anxiety that effects the way he functions within the ward. This nervous energy was spotted out by McMurphy, just minutes after entering the ward of men before him. McMurphy is insistent on having control of the ward, so he utilizes Billys overwhelming fear to locate the bull goose loony on the ward (p. 19). McMurphys strategy to find out who hes going to replace is by pressuring Billy, by lean[ing] down and glar[ing] so hard that Billy feels compelled to stutter out that he isnt the buh-buh-buh-bull goose loony yet, though hes next in luh-luh-line for the job (p. 19). The pressure Billy feels from the way McMurphy first approaches him with a question is enough to not only scare him into speaking, but also induces his stutter, which is an indication of his anxiety level. Once Billy Bibbit informs McMurphy that Harding is the bull goose loony, both Harding and McMurphy use his anxious and quiet demeanor to show dominance over the other. Instead of speaking directly to each other, they speak through Billy. Mr. Bibbit, you might warn this Mr. Harding that Im so crazy I admit to voting for Eisenhower. Bibbit! You tell Mr. McMurphy Im so crazy I voted for Eisenhower twice (p. 21). And so on. Although in this altercation, Billy is too nervous to actually speak, his fear is used against him as the men address each other through him. Although the argument is short lasted, it proves to be a new situation for Billy, as McMuphys arrival to the ward brought him additional over-stimulating attention, causing him to become frantic in his actions. Billy nods his head up and down real fast; Billys tickled with all the attention hes getting (p. 21). Billy isnt used to being addressed in such a manor that McMurphy brings to the ward, so although the attention Billys receiving isnt all negative, it is all out of his comfort zone, leaving him anxious and excited over his spot in the ward. Billy is in the ward for multiple things, but none of which justify why he is there in the first place. He is also incarcerated by the Big Nurse due to his stutter. In todays world, a stutter is not often recognized as a mental disability, but because he was considered different back in the day because of it, he was sentenced to the life of an insane man. His stutter is also influenced by his mood. Whenever Bibbit is in a situation that sparks his anxiety, or is driven by fear, his stutter gets worse. His stutter is often affiliated with the dominance Nurse Ratched asserts over him. After a group meeting that didnt go great for the men of the ward, Billy said You s-saw what she c-can do to us! In the m-m-meeting todayAh, its no use. I should just k-k-kill myself (p. 68). Billys stutter appears here with the presence of suicidal thoughts, showing that his nervous behavior and stutter go hand in hand. Because of one bad meeting, he has not only resorted to suicidal thoughts, but he has a hard time even projecting those thoughts because they have induced his stutter. However, it is no wonder as to why Billy Bibbits condition is not improving from his time on the ward. There is a story that once, years ago, Santa came into the ward on Christmas. He should have been hurrying along, but the black boys move[d] in with flashlights [and] kept him [for] six years before they discharged him, clean-shaven and skinny as a pole (p. 76). Considering even Santa Claus can be pulled apart and shaken by living on the ward, it is obvious, that Billy, already having anxiety and a stutter, cannot benefit the way he should be from help. Toward the end of the book, McMurphy gives Billy the comfort of a woman, which seems to heal his stutter and bring confidence to his being, but it lasts up until he is caught by Nurse Ratched. Big Nurse threatens Billy, by saying she is going to tell his mom, words that made Bibbit flinch and put his hand to his cheek like hed been burned with acid (p . 314). Because Nurse Ratched is still aware of the strength she has over Billy, she continues onto telling Billy his actions are going to disturb [his mother] terribly[and] how ill the woman can become (p. 315). Billy then, due to Nurse Ratcheds rule, goes into a terrible fit of anxiety and stutter, begging Big Nurse Nuh! Nuh!You d-dont n-n-needDuh-duh-duh-dont t-tell, m-m-m-miss Ratched. Duh-duh-duh (p. 315). Billy has become so scared, that he can no longer speak fluently. His fear, and Nurse ratched have crippled him, with lasting consequences. Billys character is also a bit of a push-over when it comes to everyday things. Toward the end of the novel, we learn of a character whos actions may just be the cause of Billys turtle-like demeanor; his mother. Billy, throughout the novel, has been marked as child-like, and young looking. It may solely be due to the fact that his mother has babied him his whole life. The relationship Billy and his mother share would more likely fit that of a relationship between a mother and her three-year-old toddler. She works as a receptionist at the ward, and Chief Bromdon once recalled watching Billys mom take her boy by the hand and lead him outsideand Billy lay beside her and put his head in her lap [letting] her tease at his ear with a Dandelion fluff (p. 294, 295). It may sound sweet, until you remember that he is a th-th-thirty-one [year] old man (p. 295). Because of this child like relationship he holds with his mother, and with the safe assumption that their relationship has likely been similar to this his entire life, he exhibits behavior of a child stuck in a full-grown mans body. Billy Bibbits overwhelming struggle with the feeling of inferiority to others is a sole reason he took his life. The feeling of anxiety and fear led Billy to end it all in one slice to the neck, while left alone in Nurse Ratcheds office. The poor miserable, misunderstood boy [that] killed himself left a mark to all others around him (p. 318). Billys life proved that we are all a result of our environments, and that regardless of anxiety, and fear, being condemned and overpowered is likely what made him, and all of the other patients in Nurse Ratcheds ward truly insane.

In many of the organized ancient civilizations, it was very common to find a primarily patriarchal civilization in government as well as in society. It is their belie f that, while gathering foods for their tribes, women realized the connection between leaving seeds in the ground and the growth of plants. For a while these simple methods of farming were carried out by women, however, as more advancements were made in agriculture it was realized that farming could no longer be performed solely by women, as it demanded large amounts of strength that a woman wasn’t physically capable of. In addition, farming demanded large amounts of time so it began to become an expectation that a woman would remain home and take care of the house and children while her husband worked out in the fields. It borders on the South China Sea to the west, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Celebes Sea to the south. The countrys closest neighbors are the island of Borneo to the southwest, and Taiwan to the north. The Philippine islands are mountainous  and seismically active. Earthquakes are common, and a number of active volcanoes dot the landscape, such as Mt. Pinatubo, the Mayon Volcano, and the Taal Volcano. The highest point is Mt. Apo, 2,954 meters (9,692 ft.); the lowest point is sea level. Climate The climate in the Philippines is tropical and monsoonal. The country has an average yearly temperature of 26.5 C (79.7 F); May is the warmest month, while January is the coolest. The monsoon rains, called habagat, hit from May to October, bringing torrential rain which is abetted by frequent typhoons. An average of 6 or 7 typhoons per year strikes the Philippines. November to April is the dry season, with December through February also being the coldest part of the year. Economy Prior to the global economic slowdown of 2008-09, the economy of the Philippines had been growing at an average of 5 percent annually since 2000. According to the World Bank, the countrys GDP in 2008 was $168.6 billion US or $3,400 per capita; in 2017 it had grown to S304.6  billion US, a nominal growth rate of 6.7 percent, but per capita purchasing power has dropped with the population growth to $2,988 US. GDP is predicted to continue on its expansionary path and grow at an annual rate of 6.7 percent in both 2018 and 2019. In 2020, growth is expected to level out at 6.6 percent. The unemployment rate is 2.78 percent (2017 estimate). The primary industries in the Philippines are agriculture, wood products, electronics assembly, garment and footwear manufacturing, mining, and fishing. The Philippines also has an active tourism industry  and receives remittances from some 10 million overseas Filipino workers. Electrical power generation from geothermal sources could become important in the future. History of the Philippines People first reached the Philippines about 30,000 years ago, when the first people immigrated from Sumatra and Borneo via boats or land-bridges. They were followed by an influx from Malaysia. More recent immigrants include Chinese beginning in the ninth century CE and Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth. Ferdinand Magellan claimed the Philippines for Spain in 1521. During the next 300 years, Spanish Jesuit priests and conquistadors spread Catholicism and Spanish culture across the archipelago, with particular strength on the island of Luzon. The Spanish Philippines was actually controlled by the government of Spanish North America prior to Mexican independence in 1810. Throughout the Spanish colonial era, the people of the Philippines staged a number of uprisings. The final, successful revolt began in 1896  and was marred by the executions of Filipino national hero Jose Rizal (by the Spanish) and Andres Bonifacio (by rival Emilio Aguinaldo). The Philippines declared its independence from Spain on June 12, 1898. However, the Filipino rebels did not defeat Spain unaided; the United States fleet under Admiral George Dewey actually had destroyed Spanish naval power in the area in the May 1 battle of Manila Bay. Philippine-American War Rather than granting the archipelago independence, the defeated Spanish ceded the country to the United States in the December 10, 1898, Treaty of Paris. Revolutionary hero General Emilio Aguinaldo led the rebellion against American rule that broke out the following year. The Philippine-American War lasted three years and killed tens of thousands of Filipinos and about 4,000 Americans. On July 4, 1902, the two sides agreed to an armistice. The US government emphasized that it did not seek permanent colonial control over the Philippines, and set about instituting governmental and educational reform. Throughout the early 20th century, Filipinos took increasing amounts of control over the governance of the country. In 1935, the Philippines was established as a self-governing commonwealth, with Manuel Quezon as its first president. The nation was slated to become fully independent in 1945, but World War II interrupted that plan. Japan invaded the Philippines, leading to the deaths of over a million Filipinos. The US under General Douglas MacArthur was driven out in 1942 but retook the islands in 1945. Republic of the Philippines On July 4, 1946, the Republic of the Philippines was established. The early governments struggled to repair the damage caused by World War II. From 1965 to 1986, Ferdinand Marcos ran the country as a fiefdom. He was forced out in favor of Corazon Aquino, the widow of Ninoy Aquino, in 1986. Aquino left office in 1992, and later presidents are Fidel V. Ramos (president from 1992–1998), Joseph Ejercito Estrada (1998–2001), Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (2001–2010), and Benigno S. Aquino III (2010–2016). The current president, Rodrigo Duterte, was elected in 2016.

Literary Analysis Of The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall ...

Rachell Burns English 1302 Section 155 October 26, 2015 Symbolism in Literature Writers often use a myriad of different literary techniques to express different ideas to those who read their work. One of the most common tools authors utilize would be the use of symbols to portray an abstract meaning different from the literal interpretation of the text. This element of a story helps connect an object or idea with the greater meaning within a story through literary analysis. This helps make the moral of the story more meaningful to the specific reader. In â€Å"The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,† â€Å"A Jury of Her Peers,† and â€Å"A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,† Katherine Porter, Susan Glaspell, and Gabriel Marquez use one or more predominant symbols to enforce the integrity of the message they are trying to convey to their readers. One example of strong symbolism is in â€Å"The Jilting of Granny Weatherall,† by Katherine Porter when the author uses the color blue as a way to connect the present with dif ferent phases in the life of Granny Weatherall, the main character who comes to accept the inevitability of her own death. The color is first used to describe the, â€Å"white stone-china jars with blue whirligigs and words painted on them: coffee, tea, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, allspice,† (Porter) in the neatly kept home of her youth. The author seems to use the color to bring to life a part of Granny’s life when she was young, energetic, and kept a well-organized house. The next time the

Financial Performance of Marriott Corporation Case Study

Essays on Financial Performance of Marriott Corporation Case Study The paper "Financial Performance of Marriott Corporation" is a perfect example of a case study on finance and accounting. Marriott International, Inc. is one of the leading hospitality firms with an estimated three thousand nine hundred properties around the world and 18 brands. Alice Marriott and J. Willard founded it. It is headquartered in Bethesda USA. In the 2013 fiscal year, the company earned revenues of almost $13 billion. This shows the company’s rate of growth has been satisfying. In 1987, the company’s sales increased by 24% while return on equity remained at 22%. The company deals in three divisions: contract services, restaurants, and lodging. The growth of the company is in line with its three main objectives of being the preferred employer, being the preferred provider and lastly being the most profitable company. What is the proper way for Marriott management to measure the firm's debt capacity?Measuring the debt capacity of Marriott Company involves eval uating the amount of debt the company can repay on time without forfeiting its financial capability. It involves determining the company's appropriate maximum value of long-term debt that could remain outstanding at a given time. When determining its debt capacity, the company should consider its cash flow, current assets, and fixed assets. In addition to this increase in interest rates of a company shares as well as the floating rates can also increase its debt capacity. Other methods that can be used to measure the company debt capacity include the company’s ability to pay above the government bond rates. The part of debt at a floating rate, the market value of its shares, the  fraction  at  fixed  rates as well as the credit  spread for the company as  a  whole could also be used to increase its debt capacity as well as motivate investors to lend the company some money.Has Marriott fully utilized its debt capacity? It is very hard to determine if Marriott has fully utilized its debt capacity. According to its chief financial officer, 74% of the company operating income would be provided for by the hotel management operations. The low volatility of cash flows coming from management contracts enabled Marriott Company to a higher level of debt capacity relative to cash flows that would not have been possible had the company had a bad debt capacity.   The company acknowledged the link between the debt capacity and the stability of cash flows in its financial statement. The statement states that the debt capacity of the firm is determined by the variability and amount of its cash flows’. A combination of high debt capacity and of low capital requirements enabled the Marriott family to maintain the control of the firm even though its revenue by 512% from 1980 to 1992.Repurchasing its own stockRepurchase of stock could lead to financing the firm, investing in the firm, controlling the firm as well as distributing shareholders. It can a lso be viewed as a way of using the company’s excess debt capacity. The company would be able to reduce the cost of equity financing. This is likely to enable the firm to reinvest in the company while at the same time increase its capacity to earn more profits in the future. Consequently, the corporation would determine the value of its share rather than depending on the market price of shares.

Creativity of the Individuals -Free-Samples -Myassignmenthelp

Question: 1.Use SCAMPER to generate Ideas for how the site could be used. 2.Make a recommendation on what you think is the best idea, and explain why you think so? Expand on the idea. Why werent other Ideas considered? Answer: 1.The aspects of creativity and innovation help the individuals to escape from the known domains and penetrate into the unknown realms of capability. Herein, lays the concept of thinking out of the box. As a matter of specification, the box relates to the limitations and binding, within which the individuals perform the tasks (Vantassel 2016). The diversification of the word out relates to the rational application in terms of enhancing the creativity. Delving deep into the variables, Creativity and innovation are interrelated with each other. Countering this, effective utilization of the intellect and rationality bestows creative ideas upon the individuals. On the contrary, experimentation with the available ideas upgrades the imaginative power of the individuals. Evaluation helps the individuals to examine the effectiveness, appropriateness and feasibility of the exposed performance in terms of the identified targets (Somech and Anat 2013). Along with this, evaluation brings to the forefront the potential drawbacks in the exposed performance. Application of spontaneity in the rectification of these drawbacks uplifts the personality of the individuals in terms of the performance of the basic tasks. There are several ways in which the individuals can enhance their creativity. One of these is SCAMPER. This is the acronym for the aspects of substitute, combine, adapt, modify, put to other uses, eliminate and reverse or rearrange. According to the functionality of this idea, this acronym can be placed in equal alignment with the action of putting thinking hats, which enhances the attribute of individuality for the individuals (Yoshida et al. 2014). The same is applicable for the property, around which the discussion revolves. The following shows the applicability of Scamper for the site. Utilization of the site for other purposes than the usual ones, relates to the initial letter, S. This type of utilization relates to the aspect of experimenting with the available ideas. Achieving failure with one idea requires the immediate application of the alternative ideas. This saves a lot of time and projects the attributes of perseverance in case of the achievement of positive outcomes. This substitution might be a distortion with the usual conventions of the utilization of the plot, however, substitution in the utilization might result in the effective and judicious utilization (Sarooghi et al. 2015). On the site, there are ruins of three buildings, with which nurseries can be created for preserving the plants and trees, losing their beauty amidst the ruins. The presence of outdoor barbeque would be an advantage for the university authorities in terms of serving lip-smacking delicacies to the students through picnics and other fun activities. Experimentation with the available ideas relates to the second letter, c. combination of the known ideas helps the personnel to pick out the most appropriate ideas for the effective utilization of the site. Countering this, trying to develop a new idea from the combination of ideas enhances the creativity of the individuals. As an example, combining the ruins of the building and the plants, another garden can be created, which is made of rocks (Litchfield et al. 2014). This garden can be kept for attracting the foreign inspectors towards the upgradation of the university. The garden created out by the ruins of the earth buildings relates to the creativity of the artisans in order to alter the scenario of the university. Along with this, this step adds value to the attribute of innovation. Seeking guidance from the agency partners for the effective utilization of the plot broadens the scope and arena of the administrative authorities of the university. Within this, most of the times there is a tendency for conflicts that might arise among the university personnel and the partners (Bateson et al. 2013). Countering this, adjusting with the provided solutions of the partners prove beneficial for the university personnel in terms of enhancing their creativity. Herein, lays the symbolic significance of the fourth letter, that is a. Herein, the action of experimentation finds its applicability. As a matter of specification, seeking out innovative ways and means for utilizing the materials at hand enhances the creativity of the university authorities. Along with this, creating something innovative with the handy materials saves a lot of time for the university, which can be devoted to the other related activities (Auernhammer and Hazel 2014). Aligning this with the case scena rio, the close proximity of Murdoch University veterinary farm can be utilized for developing a hospital for curing the stray animals. Hiring experts for delivering courses on pet care can be beneficial for the university authorities in terms of utilizing the plot in an effective and judicious manner. Moreover, creating innovative things, out of ruins, sheds off the tag of ruins from the material and adds color to it. The next letter is m, which stands for modification. Typical examples of modification are changing the color, shape and size of the materials. Aligning the case of the plot in this context, dismantling of the ponds, barbeque kitchen and office space can result in the creation of a library and a stationery shop (Frow et al. 2015). Countering this, stationery shop needs a small space, which can be created within the vacant space in the garden. Counter arguing this, creation of both library and stationery shop needs enough financial flexibility. Dismantling of the pre-existing structures bears correlation with changing the shape of the university structure, which is a distortion of the traditional structure as well as a gradual progression towards the creation of something new and innovative for the betterment of the university as a whole. Along with this, if flowery plants are bought by the university authorities, it would add to the beauty of the garden, which is gradually losing its significance (Bateson et al. 2013). Along with this, if the rock like structures is placed along the surface area of the pond, it would add an extra feature to the garden. Adopting these steps would act as a recreation for the university personnel in their leisure walks in the evening. The fifth letter is p, which relates to the introductory letter, s. Putting the material into other usages can be aligned with its alternative uses. Emerging successful in this usage is one of the other ways of enhancement of the imagination and creativity. In case of the plot of Murdoch University, the office space can be utilized as coaching classes. This is possible only if the university personnel emerge successful in extending the limitations of the space into the vastness of auditorium halls (Sarooghi et al. 2015). Apart from this, the office space can be used as a hospital for the treatment of the animals. Inclusion of pet care courses within the curriculum would help the university in terms of enhancing the parameter of corporate social responsibility. The second last letter of the thinking is e, which stands for elimination. Elimination relates with removal of the materials, which are irrelevant for the performance of the task. Countering this, elimination can be aligned with the action of optimization, which takes the individuals directly to the tasks that needs to be performed. This optimization inculcated within the individuals, self-organizational skills (Somech and Anat 2013). Countering this, exposure of persisting attitude for creating something new enhances the imaginative power of the individuals. Sometimes, reducing the size of the material also serves the purpose of this stage. Decreasing the size of barbeque kitchen and the office space adds to the garden area. This addition is a further addition in the total surface area of the university, which if utilized properly enables the university personnel to achieve positive outcomes. Apart from reducing and removal, elimination also comprises of simplification of the materi al components. Here, removal of the earthy building ruins clears out a lot of space from the garden (Vantassel 2016). This cleansing adds to the greenery of the university garden and adds to the surface area. Viewing it from other perspective, this addition contradicts the aspects of the elimination; however, it leads to the innovation, which leads to creativity. Counter arguing this, clearing out the ruins can be aligned with the action of elimination. Apart from this, one of the other components of elimination is reversing or rearranging. Typical example of this re-arrangement is altering the purpose for which the spaces around the plot were used by the university personnel. This re-arrangement might be a distortion of the integrated structure of the university; however, this distortion is a gradual progression towards the creation of something innovative (Yoshida et al. 2014). According to the functionality of this stage, it can be equated with making alternate usage of the plot. Altering the architectural design of the barbeque kitchen is an innovative task for the university personnel. Within this, taking some space from the garden enlarges the garden area, combination of which can be utilized for creating a massive library. The penultimate letter of the thinking activity is r, which stands for rearrange. Herein, lays the symbolic significance of the earlier letter of e, which stands for elimination. Rearranging the materials bears resemblance with the action of reversing the structure (Litchfield et al. 2014). Specifically, rearranging can be done by projecting the inside of the material outside or contracting the outer surface area of the material towards inner surface area. Typical example in this direction is the utilization of the barbeque kitchen for office purposes and vice versa. This rearrangement aligns with the action of substitution, which is an agent of enhancing innovation and creativity. After highlighting the applicability of all the letters in SCAMPER, it can be said that the letters bears resemblance with the thinking stages. Countering this, the letters can be aligned with the action of experimenting with the known ideas (Auernhammer and Hazel 2014). Conjoining both the sentences, thinking can be considered as an experiment. Herein, lays the correlation with the letter e. The letter signifies elimination of the irrelevant thoughts, which is a gradual progression towards the appropriate idea. Delving deep into the issue, the stage of elimination can be considered as a rearrangement of the known and gathered ideas, thoughts and concepts. The earlier sentence adds value to the penultimate letter of the activity. Re-arrangement aligns with the action of modification. This modification requires the elimination of the irrelevant ideas, thoughts and concepts that deviates the individuals from the identified and the specified targets (Litchfield et al. 2014). This elimination relates with the substitute usage of the thoughts, ideas and concepts. Herein, lays the symbolic significance of the letter P. Further in this issue, the individuals need to make adjustments with the peer pressure, which is usually different from the self-generated ideas. The earlier sentence relates to the letter A. countering this, conflicting and chaotic environment sometimes bestows innovative ideas upon the individuals. Attachment of the act of evaluation in this context can be equalized with the importance of the letter, m, which stands for modification. Viewing it from other perspectives, this modification comprises of rearrangement in case of the gathered and available thoughts, ideas and concepts (Yoshida et al. 2014). The adjective gathered in the earlier sentence adds to the adaptability of the individuals in terms of rational and intellectual application. This interplay with the letters of the thinking activity bears resemblance with the experimentation c apabilities of the university personnel in terms of making effective and judicious utilization of the site. 2.Recommendation can be considered as an outcome for the exposed performance. Herein, lays the effectiveness and appropriateness of the evaluation process, which brings to the forefront the potential drawbacks. Consideration of recommendations enhances and upgrades the preconceived skills of the individuals. Achievement of success with the help of the proposed recommendations adds value to the prefix re, which relates with the act of rearrangement (Litchfield et al. 2014). This is due to the modifications, which are needed for adjusting with the substitutes, which enhances the personality. Herein, lays the appropriateness of the action of putting the thinking hats, which alters the personality of the individuals. The same is applicable for the Murdoch University. Starting from the entrance, if the distance of the Discovery Drive is reduced, then the visitors, students and the other personnel would not have to walk a long distance for reaching the university. Along with this, if a car slider is created, it will be easier for the cars to slide through the gates of the university (Frow et al. 2015). Next in sequence comes the garden. Within, this, if the ruins of the earthy buildings are transformed into rock like structures, it would add to the beauty and magnificence of the pond. Utilizing the rock cut structures to create fountains in the ponds projects effective and judicious utilization of the garden spaces. Other buildings of the garden are the barbeque kitchen and the office spaces. If the space of the barbeque kitchen is enlarged, it would result in the creation of delicious dishes, which would cater to the appetite needs of the university staffs, students as well as the visitors (Bateson et al. 2013). Apart from this, if skilled and efficient chefs are hired, it would result in the effective and judicious utilization of the kitchen. If large number of chairs, tables and other furniture are obtained by the university personnel, then the office space can be resumed with its usual functionality. On the contrary, if the office space is turned into coaching classes, then also the plot would attain judicious utilization. This bears partial relevance with the requirements of the assignment. Countering this, as the name of the site is Environment Technology centre, utilizing the vacant garden spaces to create nurseries and pet are hospitals would help the university personnel to preserve the ecological biodiversity (Litchfield et al. 2014). Apart from this, if the ruins of the earthy buildings are used to creating homes for the stray animals, then also the site would be properly used. However, regular are would align with the tag of judicious utilization. Above all, financial flexibility is required for the achievement of positive outcomes in terms of achieving positive outcomes. For this, meetings and conferences can be arranged with the stakeholders and shareholders. These meetings would help the university personnel to examine the appropriateness and feasibility of the suggested recommendations in terms of the identified and specified business requirements. Putting the recommendations on the social media and website portals would make the university personnel aware of the customer responses (Somech and Anat 2013) References Auernhammer, Jan, and Hazel Hall. Primis Custom Publishing free essay sample

McGraw-Hill’s lengthy history of catering to the academic needs of educators and students along with the desire to improve its offerings to professors, in particular, was what led to this system of customizing college textbooks (Adobe Systems, Inc. , 2002). According to McGraw-Hill, the traditional route to publishing textbooks to be utilized in higher education is one that is a long, linear process that involves authors who must write content prior to a panel of instructors reviewing it. Then a layout is created by a designer, which highlights methods of instruction. Along the way photos are researched, permissions to use information is then requested, and art programs are set up. The material is further scrutinized to insure its accurateness before the final content is approved. Thereafter, the compositor is able to produce the book, one page after the other. Subsequent to a second proofing of material to be published, printing must take place. Presses roll at the printing plant while publishing officials make contact with faculty to inform them of the latest which the company provides in traditional textbooks, as well as to bring finality to the text adoption process for the upcoming term. At the plant, the completed texts are cataloged, stored in warehouses and ultimately shipped. This is essentially the way textbooks were produced before Primis (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). The problem with the traditional model is that text organization and content could not be modified or made specific for each course. It was an editor at McGraw-Hill back in 1988, which first got the idea to delve into custom publishing. The fact that the company failed to make predictions as to the content many professors may require, the editor decided the time had come to do something about it. Thus, he came up with the concept of custom publishing textbooks that allowed professors to tailor content according to their individual course needs. By this time, McGraw-Hill had been in the publishing business for years and had accumulated a great deal of experience. With much textbook content to work with, the only issue that was before the company was what form the output should take. After consideration of custom publishing, approval and funding were granted. As a direct result, Primis, the custom publishing division of McGraw-Hill was started (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). After it had been decided that Primis would be funded, the project team began detailing those things that would be necessary to bring the custom publishing idea to fruition. Cathleen Mattura, Manager of Custom Publishing who has been a part of the McGraw-Hill since 1987, states that some considerations included questions surrounding sufficient funding, the technological means, and the justification of such a new kind of project. It was evident that arriving at a wonderful idea and seeing it through to the end were two separate things. Other considerations included ways to keep content fresh and whether the company would be successful at printing whole textbooks on demand. Pricing and the overall quality of custom published textbooks were other concerns. Hence, the Primis team immediately used the systems approach into action to solve the problem (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). Once the opportunity for business had been defined and the overall solution identified, other project details needed to be discussed. At that point, he feasibility of custom publishing was in question. Mattura adds that in 1987, the company had a single fax machine- a sign of the technological times. Therefore, the Primis team wondered if the company had the technology to accomplish its goal. Also, it needed to know what would be entailed systematically and the thought processes that might be necessary to correctly prepare the material. Questions revolving around storage, printing and shipping also emerged (McGraw-Hill MIS Video, 2005). Some questions McGraw-Hill might have asked as part of determining feasibility of the Primis idea were how difficult it may be for sales representatives to push custom publishing, what percentage of college professors might be interested in adopting custom published textbooks or what accommodations could be included to attract greater student interest. What content could be included to aid student comprehension is another question the Primis team could have posed. Initially, the systems approach did not seem to work all that well because it left the team wondering if it should go on or simply halt the project. In the preliminary stages, the team could have asked questions as to how the new system would be fully implemented. Had this been done early on, the Primis system may not have been a success. Success in any field necessitates a certain amount of risk. That is why I think I would have implemented the system armed with the information the team had at the time, even though many more questions and challenges were apparent. McGraw-Hill had not been aware of the challenges it would have to face when it pledged to fund a custom textbook publishing project. Even though the goal was to establish a system which was capable of supporting mass customization of textbook content, the technology to accomplish custom printing was very limited at that time. Further, major publishers had never attempted this type project, therefore, McGraw-Hill was acting in the role of publishing trailblazer. In spite of this knowledge, the Primis team felt strongly that any work on the project to combat barriers would justify any funds expended in the end. After completion of the initial feasibility study, the team started the process of developing and evaluating alternate systems solutions by taking a close look at and comparing the current publishing process to the one that was proposed. Then they went on to identify a solution that would best meet McGraw-Hill’s needs (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). As the Primis team began contending with the details of the new system, uneasiness concerning the initial stages of the project was beginning to wane. The process necessary to custom publish textbooks began to take on a more defined form. For instance, the design of the content database was derived and the requirements for printing and for documents that were formatted were determined. Mattura declares that the team would have to make sure that content was stored in a medium that was reliable and that could be printed. In essence, it had to be capable of being read by a digital press or copy machine. So the company settled on Xerox and IBM to meet its needs. When the process engineering activities and requirements were completed, the team went on to develop, evaluate and select the best system configurations. It gave special attention to ways to integrate the new Primis system with existing back-end systems when it came to print, managing inventory, managing ISBN’s, fulfilling orders and royalties (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). Ginny Moffat, Vice-President of Coureo Content Delivery, contends that Primis needed to interface with several back-end systems, which was the prime challenge for implementation of the new system. Having Primis interface with front-end systems was easier because it involved putting things on the web and having individuals select items. However, it would be more difficult to have the system automatically interface with back-end systems. The main systems it had to interface with were the royalties system, the ISBN system, the metadata system and the sales rep database (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). To achieve competitive advantage, cost, quality, speed and service all served as driving forces in the development of the Primis system for McGraw-Hill. The Primis system’s design was aligned with the business customer in mind because it made it relatively easy for college professors to pick and choose the content based on individual preference, available on emand. The turnaround time for orders is swift and the cost is less than the cost of the traditional text. To deal with the knowledge that technology was likely to change in both the short and long run, the team chose vendors who were using what was becoming the standard in the industry- Postscript by Adobe (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). Competitors in the world of college textbook publishing were on edge when McGraw-Hill introduced the Primis system. At the time, a prolific amount of information was released to market the system, including full page ads that were placed in the New York Times. However, competitors were not aware that the Primis system was experiencing huge technical issues and that large sums of capital had been committed to insure the project’s success. The company was claiming that there was a 48-hour turnaround from the time a textbook was ordered to the time it was to be completed. During that time, the company was taking the product and making it modular, removing any references to previous chapters. The challenge was to make these changes right away and to make the product available quickly. Once the web arose, the issue of migrating the Primis system into one that was web-based arose. The team’s decision to create a digital file format for storage of Primis content was significant. The technological choices the Primis team made were wise because Postscript was later capable of being transformed to PDF (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). To implement the Primis system took 18 months. During that time, software was written and acquired. Hardware like system units storage and printers were installed. Components were tested and content was loaded into the database. Training was also developed for the workers in sales, and the teams which had been established for technical support got to work. McGraw-Hill was ready to formerly introduce Primis to the rest of the world (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). I believe prototyping may have helped the Primis team because it would have given it the opportunity to discover the many challenges it would encounter in advance of spending large sums of capital to see the project along. End users should have played a great part in the development of the system since they are the ones who will be interacting with it. McGraw-Hill used teams of employees at every level throughout the company to have a hand in creating and developing the system, thereby increasing the chances of success for the system. The relationship of Primis to back-end systems was crucial because it was through this relationship that royalties got paid, and ISBN’s were identifiable, and inventories and databases were accessed. If I were the project manager for Primis, I would have used a prototype in order to get a real idea of what barriers might arise while trying to launch such a new type of project. System maintenance involves monitoring, evaluating and modifying an operational system in order to remain relevant technologically and competitively. Once the Internet came on the scene in the 1990’s McGraw-Hill realized it needed a web presence. Moffat asserts that the company knew it had to have some kind of digital custom delivery. It gathered a high-level team of company officials within the company’s higher education group, such as the heads of editorial, marketing, sales and even workers in production to make sure college professors knew that Primis was what they needed. They searched to find if there were any other alternatives when it came to online delivery and online web interface. Outside vendors were considered and other projects that were taking place at McGraw-Hill were mentioned. The vision for what the team wanted college professors to be able to do or not, was discussed. Even though much time was spent to achieve support at every level of the company, the success of the Primis project was on the line. Now with the web-based front end order entry interface, a tremendous demand for custom products is occurring. Further, the Primis system is yet evolving. The addition of eBooks is now a reality (McGraw-Hill MIS Video Clip, 2005). Were I a professor considering adoption of a custom textbook for my students, I would choose the color eBook because today, with the state of technology changing so often, students quickly lose interest in things they do not find very exciting. With the proliferation of gadgets available, color eBooks may grab their attention and hold it for longer periods of times because the content may be similar to the content and graphics viewed on computers, iPads and other electronic devices they already use. If I were managing the content in the Primis database, the criteria I would use to determine what gets added include the most current information available and information that is well-researched. Since many print textbooks are revised every few years, content in the Primis database would only be affected to the extent that the college professors stipulate. Ebrary, in the business of offering software and services in the area of online copyrighted content delivery announced that McGraw-Hill Custom Publishing chose the ebrarian software solution as a core technology to use with its customized Primis online e-book courseware students access through the Internet. Moffat asserts that the partnership with ebrary makes it possible for students to gain access to online materials in the course from computers that are situated at any location. They will also be able to do so at any time and not be concerned about excessive download times (PR Newswire, 2001). McGraw-Hill Education has managed to bring custom publishing to a whole new level with its new Create program which provides for professors, unprecedented control over the customization of content used on college campuses. With this innovative system, professors can make their own e-books or printed textbooks by choosing content that is available from a large online collection of resources, as well as get digital proofs in less than one hour (PR Newswire, 2013). Accordingly, McGraw-Hill Education, a global company which provides information services, took the lead with the creation of Primis Custom Publishing in 1989. An editor with a keen vision saw a need among college professors in the delivery of adequate coursework content and came up with the idea of publishing custom texts. After exhausting a timely process that involved employees at all levels within the company, the Primis team was able to successfully bring to the world, a new way of publishing. As a result, many college professors can now choose precise content they need to teach their courses. They no longer have to rely on texts that only partially meet their needs.

Protection Of The Commercial Use Of Free Speech Essays - Censorship

Protection Of The Commercial Use Of Free Speech If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea morally offensive or disagreeable. It is because I believe these words by Justice Brennan, I stand for the negation of todays resolution, that When they Conflict, Respect for....... Cultural Sensitivity Ought To Be Valued Above Commercial Use of Free Speech. My value for todays debate is that of Free expression, which I will define as the freedom to express our thoughts, ideas, and beliefs, freely and openly, without restraint. My criteria is the degree to which free speech is allowed in the business environment. I have three contentions to support my value of Free Expression, and to negate the resolution. My first contention is, It is virtually impossible to avoid offending someones culture in our multi-cultural society. Second, Freedom of speech is based on our valuing the autonomy of individuals to make informed decisions. My third contention is that there is no moral responsibility of the commercial media to suppress certain speech because it violates some cultural sensitivity. My first contention is It is virtually impossible to avoid offending someones culture in our multi-cultural society. As Edward J. Eberle states, One mans vulgarity, is another mans lyric.. The concept of cultural sensitivity is too vague a concept to be enforced. One can intend no offense, and yet offense can be taken. How many people must be offended before it constitutes cultural insensitivity? In a country that will tolerate hate speeches by the Ku Klux Klan in the name of free speech, it is unreasonable to limit the commercial use of free speech because someone might be offended by a commercial. Let the general public determine what is offensive and they will react with disfavor. If the public felt strongly enough to boycott products and services because they were offended by a companys advertising, that company will pull the add. That is the American way, and it works. My second contention is that, Freedom of speech is based on our valuing the autonomy of individuals to make informed decisions. The resolution suggests that it would be wise to remove certain types of information from the public- those that violate the cultural sensitivity of some people. The resolution also suggests that individual members of our culture are not capable of making informed decisions on matters of cultural sensitivity. No one cultural outlook is so privileged that it cannot or should not be included in the testing that occurs in the marketplace of ideas. If we as a society ever get to the point that we view the diminishing of freedom of speech as moral, we endanger our ability to live in a free society. Because the resolution asks that we as a society we adopt a moral stance that can only be seen as changing the way free speech operates in our society, it cannot be affirmed. My third and last contention is that there is no moral responsibility of the commercial media to suppress certain speech because it violates some cultural sensitivity. The responsibility of the commercial media is to their audience and shareholders. This is the moral basis of capitalism- to meet the needs of the people in a free society. Consumers enter the marketplace to satisfy their needs. If by chance members of a specific culture are offended by media content, they are under no obligation to consume the products. They can put the book down. They can turn of their Television. They can leave the theater when an offensive movie is playing. They can also form boycotts against specific products and companies. These are the rights of the consumer. Because Free expression is a basic American value, and limitations on it should be minimized, and because the concept of cultural sensitivity is too ambiguous, I ask you to join me in negating the resolution. Ambassadors Essays

Ambassadors Essays Ambassadors Essay Ambassadors Essay Jenya Mavromati Panayiotis Karafotias IREL-480-9 For my paper I decided to write about the ambassadors of Denmark, The United States of America and Uruguay. His Excellency Mr. Tom Norring, the ambassador of Denmark, was one of the ambassador’s to come this semester. He decided to focus his speech not on his country but more on the global financial crisis and how it affected Greek economy. He said that even without the crisis the situation in Greece would have been messy. Despite the fact that Maastricht Treaty allows the GDP deficit in European countries not more than 3% Greece had deficit 6-7%. Ambassador said that in 2006-2007 the government of Kostas Karamanlis managed to restrain the deficit to the acceptable level, but later in 2008 they failed. Karamanlis hoped that he would be reelected and he promised to restrain the deficit, but people lost faith in him. Later George Papandreou revealed the new information about the deficit. The deficit for that time was not 8% but 12%. And thus the rescue program was established by the European Union. So Greece took course to the EU and the IMF. They wanted a hard cash and the EU and IMF tried to help with it. Then the restructuring fund was established. The public expenses had to be cut. As ambassador said â€Å"Greece has one of the biggest public administrations† and the cutting of public sector expenses will help to decrease the deficit. He also pointed out that 25% of Greek economy is black economy. The only one thing which he said about his country was that the Denmark is not the part of Eurozone. One of the reasons I enjoyed the speech of Danish ambassador was because he seemed very honest when talking about the topic. When giving his speech, he gave personal examples and continuously referred to the audience. The second ambassador was the ambassador of Uruguay, his Excellency Mr. Jose Luis Pombo Morales. He decided to focus his speech on his country and its relations with Greece and other European countries. Mr. Jose Luis Pombo Morales, talked about political system in Uruguay, that it is a  representative democratic  republic with a  presidential system. Also, he told us that, the members of government are elected for a five-year terms by a  universal suffrage  system. Uruguay is a  unitary state: justice, education, health, security, foreign policy, defence are all administered nationwide. The Executive Power is exercised by the  president  and a  cabinet  of 13 ministers. Plus to that, Mr. Ambassador talked about Uruguay as one of the biggest wool and meat exporter to the EU countries. Mr. Jose Luis Pombo, told the audience, that Uruguay is one of the most economically developed countries in South America, with a high  GDP  per capita and the 52nd highest  quality of life index  in the world. Uruguay is rated as the 2nd least corrupt country in  Latin America  (behind  Chile), although Uruguay scores considerably better than Chile on domestic polls of corruption perception. Its political and labour conditions are the highest level of freedom on the continent. The third ambassador, I want to talk about, is the ambassador of the United States of America, his Excellency Mr. Daniel Smith. Ambassador focused his speech on Greek- Turkish relations and financial crisis. His speech was very diplomatic, and tried to keep neutrality, when some students asked him questions about problems in Libya and Greek-Turkish conflicts. But, Mr. Smith, gave very clear idea, about the USA and its foreign relations. Also

Low Visibility Operations in Dubai Airport Dissertation

Low Visibility Operations in Dubai Airport - Dissertation Example In the case of Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Airport Technology (2010) reports that the foggy weather condition â€Å"causes visibility to drop below 50m, (CAT III C conditions) lasting approximately ten hours, thus affecting airport operations.† The situation of low visibility is no different in the Dubai Airport. One reason why the problem of low visibility has become a topical issue of late is the inconvenience low visibility operations cause airline operators and customers. Apart from the fact that low visibility is commonly associated with flight diversions and delays, The Office of the Federal Coordinator for Meteorology (2011) laments on issues of safety and efficiency saying â€Å"Weather alone is a significant cause of aircraft accidents and a contributing cause in many accidents with other main causes.† Happily, low visibility in airports and in aircraft operation is a problem that can be tackled. The problem statement for this dissertation therefor e is the issue of low visibility operations in Dubai Airport and how the problem can be solved to reduce flight diversions and delays. ... These objectives have been termed ‘specific objectives’ and outlined below. Specific Objectives The researcher hopes to achieve the following specific objectives in a bid to achieve the ultimate aim, which is to reduce the chances of the flights diversions and delays departing flights during low visibility operations at the Dubai Airport. The objectives are: 1. To explain the impact and effect of bad weather on aviation services with specific reference to low visibility caused as a result of foggy weather conditions. 2. To critically examine the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) requirements for airlines and how these requirements help in the daily operation of aircrafts 3. To outline the effects of bad weather and low visibility on aircraft operations 4. To find out how airside operations can be improved at the Dubai Airport 5. To examine the works and duties of air traffic services including air traffic controllers, air traffic engineers and meteorologis ts and how these duties impact on airline services. 6. To critically evaluate the training and qualification program of airport staff and how these training and qualification programs can be improved to better future airline operations. 7. To find workable strategies and models for equipping airports for low visibility operations Justification of the Research The United Arab Emirates is one of the World’s busiest air travel destinations. Specifically, Dubai is known to house a good number of people who travel to the emirate for trade and tourism purposes (Ankoma, 2010, p.18). This makes the Dubai Airport of the busiest Airports in the world. According to the Dubai Airport Media Centre (2011), â€Å"Aviation began in Dubai in 1937 when the first Imperial Airways

Media Violence and Imitation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 1

Media Violence and Imitation - Essay Example Media Violence and Imitation Susan Hurley’s article may not contain any definitive research or universally agreeable answers, and it may be victim of the same narrow partisan dogmatism that she decries (her constant derision of liberals as â€Å"outdated†, are a testament to this). But it does contain many valid points that can at least be debated if not accepted by anyone. It must also be noted that Hurley goes through great pains to distance herself from conservative demagoguery and manages to offer somewhat acceptable compromises by invoking tort instead of legislation to deal with the matter. De Bruin manages to address the issue of Tort effectively enough, by stating that a link between criminal violence and media violence may be too difficult to prove even in individual cases, rendering the entire process fruitless and a formality. Furthermore de Bruin also asks the question, how are we to decide which forms of imitative influences are good and which are bad, and one can assume that the logic al conclusion to a continuation of filtering imitative influences in the media can lead to another form of social engineering. The lines in this debate as they usually are in debates of the controversial variety are heavily blurred. The side which one takes on this issue is primarily subjective. We must decide for ourselves whether or not personal autonomy should be decreased for the greater social good and whether or not individual members of a society can decide what the greater social good involves.

A Sense of Belonging Essay Example for Free

A Sense of Belonging Essay The novel Simple Gift is written in a verse form and presented by three different perspectives of the main characters- Billy, a 16 year old runaway, Caitlin, a girl from a wealthy family and Old Bill, a homeless alcoholic. This mix of gender, social status and age forms a sense of belonging which each character gains. The first person narrator allows the reader to directly engage with each of its characters. Billy Luckett does not have any connection with his dad because he is subjected to abuse both physically and verbally. He gives a negative description of his dad saying â€Å"the old bastard†. He uses colloquial language and sarcasm â€Å"see ya dad. I’ve taken the alcohol. Drink this instead to celebrate your son leaving home.† This sense of disconnection is illustrated in the poem ‘sport’ where his father â€Å"gives him a backhander across his face, so hard he fell down† and he â€Å"slams the door on his sporting childhood†. Herrick uses this metaphor to create a sense of isolation and alienation caused by an alcoholic father. Billy has no connection to his school either. He is shown to be a rebel by saying â€Å"Billy Luckett rhymes with†¦Ã¢â‚¬ the use of ellipse highlights the feeling of disconnection. He disrespects his teachers as well which is evident when he says â€Å"Let Cheetum chew on that†. All these instances show that he does not belong and has no connection with his family or community leading him to run away. He compares his dad to Ernie, the train driver in the poem â€Å"Men†. He says that they are both opposite. â€Å"There are men like Ernie and there are men like my dad†. He refers to his dad as someone who does not perform his fatherly role emphasising on the fact that he is completely disconnected from his father. Certain people can make a person belong and Billy’s case is no different. Billy and Caitlin have nothing in common but their relationship relay’s on internal love and bonds. They both feel disconnected from the world and their families. They catch each other â€Å"doing someth ing they didn’t want to do but had to† both Billy and Caitlin are attracted to each other physically too. Billy notices she has â€Å"bouncing, shiny, clean hair and her eyes were pale green†. Caitlin notices his attitude of self-admiration and the fact that he is â€Å"homeless and proud of it.† They develop a strong sense of connection both physically and emotionally. Making to love to Caitlin was the ultimate sense of belonging. It also contrasts Kate’s description of having sex. Billy describes it as â€Å"falling headlong into the clear water of the Benderat River and opening my eyes to the beautiful phosphorescent bubbles of light.† He uses this simile to convey a feeling of a magical world. This description also shows the beauty of the emotional bond making the experience special. Billy and Caitlin, create their own â€Å"special world† which is very important to them as it enhances their belonging and connections. In the end billy gives Caitlin a â€Å"beautiful green emerald ring† he had brought thinking about her eyes which indicates the value he places on their relationship which in turn enhances the sense of maturity they both attain. After the death of his wife and daughter Jessie, Old Bill disconnects himself entirely from the world. Old Bill relays on alcohol to forget about the world and his past. However, the gifts of cigarettes trigger his memory of his daughter. Old Bill is changed by Billy’s kindness of Billy bringing him wheatbix and tea every day. This symbolises that Billy helps Old Bill to belong again after many years of remoteness from the society. Old Bill starts to treat Billy differently which shows that he has changed his attitude towards Billy and they have developed a relationship. Old Bill ultimately becomes Billy’s father figure. Towards the end he provides Billy a place to live-his house. This shows that he is letting go of the past. He finally accepts the death of his family and starts a new life. In the end he decides to travel north as it is his daughter’s dream. Old Bill also needs a change from his old life and memories. Right from the beginning, Billy has a strong connection with nature and the land. This is evident in the poem ‘Westfield Creek’. Billy uses diction and positive adjectives to show a sense of belonging to â€Å"a place he loves†. This positive description contrasts with his house and school. Billy’s view on land is positive and liberating as it a place â€Å"where he can come to read and learn.† It is his â€Å"favourite classroom.† Billy also has a strong sense of connection with the train carriage his â€Å"Motel Benderat†. He â€Å"closes the door and make a home† showing that he has shut the world out.
